Types of Dental X-Rays
Intraoral X-rays
- Bitewing: reveals decay between back teeth and hidden issues under fillings.
- Periapical: shows the entire tooth and root, used when there’s pain or to check past treatments.
- Occlusal: covers the roof or floor of the mouth, helping find extra or impacted teeth.
Extraoral X-rays
- Panoramic: captures all teeth, jaws, sinuses, and more in one single image—great for an overall view.
- 3D Cone-Beam (CBCT): gives a detailed 3D image when planning complex procedures.
Safety First
Modern digital X-rays use very low radiation, similar to what you'd get from natural surroundings or a short flight. We follow strict safety rules—only using X-rays when needed and keeping exposure as low as possible.
Recent guidance from the ADA suggests that lead aprons may no longer be required due to improved tech and minimal radiation exposure. Still, some states ask for them, so we’ll follow local regulations and your comfort level.
