THE CARE BEHIND A HEALTHY SMILE

Endodontic Retreatment

My initial visit for unknown pain revealed a cavity in my wisdom tooth. We agreed it should be extracted. I’m writing this a week later within hours of the extraction. I felt relaxed and well informed throughout the procedure. Every step as to what was happening was explained and my comfort throughout was important to them. I feel great and I was given a number to call, night or day, if I have any concerns as I heal. It was peace of mind from diagnosis to right now… My biggest discomfort is waiting 24hrs till solid food 🙂

At Watford Dental, our board-certified doctors are experienced in a wide range of comprehensive services, including root canal therapy and advanced endodontic care. When a tooth shows signs of infection following a root canal, our experts may recommend an endodontic retreatment to restore a healthy, vibrant smile. There are varying factors that may cause additional issues following root canal treatment months or even years down the road. In some cases, the infected accessory canals were not detected during the initial treatment or a new infection might have developed in the tooth. Like the initial root canal therapy, an endodontic retreatment debrides the internal areas of the tooth to eliminate the current disease and reshapes the canals. If you notice tooth pain or other signs of infection after a root canal, schedule an exam at Watford Dental to see if an endodontic retreatment can bring health and wellness back to your smile.

Best Candidates for Endodontic Retreatment

The best candidates for an endodontic retreatment would be those who have had a root canal but are still experiencing signs of disease within a tooth. Common symptoms may include pain or discomfort, swelling, or an abscess involving the tooth that received root canal therapy. If an endodontic retreatment isn’t an ideal treatment option, an apicoectomy (root tip removal) or tooth extraction may be performed at Watford Dental. In your initial consultation at one of our premier practice locations, one of our qualified practitioners will help you decide the best plan of action to treat the infection and save your tooth if possible.

What to Expect with Endodontic Retreatment

Providing outstanding care and comfort for our patients is a top priority at Watford Dental. Upon arrival at our office, you will be seated comfortably in one of our treatment rooms and offered a pair of Beats headphones for your listening enjoyment. Endodontic retreatment is performed under local anesthetic, but sedation dentistry options might also be used to help you further relax. Once your mouth is prepared, our team will reopen the tooth and take out the filling material placed during the previous process. We will thoroughly clean and disinfect the tooth and screen for any hidden accessory canals. The tooth will then be strengthened with a new filling material and sealed. After the tooth has fully healed, a new dental restoration (typically a crown) may be placed to return function and cosmetic appeal to your smile.

Endodontic Retreatment Aftercare

Following your root canal retreatment, you may want to take it easy for a few days to rest and recover. A member of our staff will go over specific instructions to help you heal after your endodontic procedure, which will include the recommended way to clean your teeth and gums. A prescription for antibiotics or pain relievers may be provided and should be taken as directed. Keeping up with a great home oral care routine, including daily flossing and brushing, can help minimize the risk of future oral issues. Additionally, we encourage you to schedule routine dental exams at Watford Dental so our practitioners can monitor your tooth and total oral health.
